How many people can travel in a Getaway Camper?

All of our campers can seat up to 4 people (We have a limited number that seat 5, but please check when booking), which is great for families or friends wanting to lower the cost of travel. Please note that the rear seat is slightly smaller for 2 large adults, but plenty of room for 1 large adult. The front and rear seats of our campers also swivel, so you can turn them round when parked up for a game of cards or a meal.

Please see the camper's page of our website for the layout of each vehicle.

How many people can sleep in a Getaway Camper?

Each camper can sleep 2 inside on the fold out double bed. We also hire an optional tent extension that fits onto the vans for the extra 2 people. Or if you want a more Funky tent why not try a VW CAMPER VAN TENT ? These sleep 4 with 2 bedrooms and a lounge. If travelling through France and Spain, you need to carry a spare set of spectacles.

Travelling in Europe from 2017 there are several new emission zones throughout Europe and the campers have to be registered in these areas. This is constantly changing and information is currently limited so would suggest a good Google search before departure.

We also recommend that if you plan on travelling through Eastern EU countries that you purchase a Vehicle on Hire Certificate (VOH). This is available on our booking system at £18 + VAT and avoids any potential problems that you could encounter in Eastern EU countries. The VOH Certificate is a legal replacement for the V5 document that is proof of ownership for the vehicle. We can not issue the original document. Please note that we require 7 working days notice to produce this.

Vehicle on Hire Certificate £18 + VAT.

Portugal: Please note that if planning on travelling through Portugal, their toll road system has recently changed.  Foreign registered vehicles MUST pay all tolls in advance at a Portuguese Post Office. They have a new automated system that does not allow any payment on the actual toll roads. Until they fix this situation and to avoid any unnecessary fines, we highly recommend avoiding toll roads in Portugal at this point in time if you are in doubt.

Switzerland: When travelling through Switzerland you will require a toll pass available from any service station.

PLEASE NOTE THAT GETAWAY CAMPERS IS NOT LIABLE FOR ANY COSTS INCURRED IF YOU ARE REFUSED ENTRY TO THE COUNTRIES LISTED ABOVE OR ANY TOLLS INCURRED DRIVING IN ANY COUNTRIES.

Approximately 550km

  What does the insurance cover?

We include Fully Comprehensive Insurance. The hirer is responsible for the excess of £500 pounds for drivers 25 - 75 and £750 for drivers aged 21 - 24. This covers the cost of damage to Third Party property including single vehicle accident, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break in or vandalism. Insurance also includes the cost of the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs. This excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental. If you run into trouble, please let Getaway Campervans know as soon as possible. Getaway Campervans strongly recommend that you have personal travel insurance while travelling. If you have an accident or breakdown, Getaway Campervans will either replace your vehicle with a similar one, or refund your hire charge for any days you lose the total use of the vehicle. It is at the discretion of Getaway Campervans as to whether we choose to release another vehicle to you following an accident depending on the circumstances.

Yes we do. Each camper comes with the AA Britain and Ireland Camping and Caravan Ground Guide. We don't presently provide information on European sites in the vans, but you can check out our Travel Advice page on our website for more information.

We recommend that you do from July - September, otherwise you should be fine. You can view our Travel Advice section for more information.

Will my mobile phone work in the UK and Europe?

It depends on your plan, but we recommend purchasing a UK sim card on arrival. These can be purchased in vending machines at any UK airport or mobile phone shop. This is useful in emergencies or even for just telling us that you want to extend your hire.

  Where can we park overnight?

Parking in the UK and Europe is pretty easy. Like anywhere, please remember that local laws do apply and any violations are your responsibility. You can often park and sleep in truck stops, but there are heaps of caravan parks and camping grounds in the UK and Europe offering great facilities at minimal cost. All of our campers come with the AA Britain and Ireland Camping Ground Guide to make life easier as well.

Please note that highway service stations do require you to pay for staying more than 2 hrs. They have cameras in operation and will fine you, so please bear this in mind.

You need to be at least 21 years of age, have a full licence and a good driving history of at least 2 years. Additionally we cannot hire to students under our present insurance arrangements sorry.   How do I pay my deposit?

Simply click on the 'Bookings & Quotes' tab on the left hand menu and click on 'Request booking'. You will be required to enter in your details including credit card details; this is for a 20% deposit to secure the reservation. If we have availability for your booking we will deduct the deposit and then send you a booking confirmation. This deposit is deducted from the balance which is payable 28 days before your pickup date. Please let us know if you intend on paying the balance with a different card otherwise we will debit the one provided.
If you have a non UK card, we will email you a link so you can pay securely online.

  What if I cancel?

Your deposit is non-refundable should you choose to cancel your reservation, but it is transferable if you tell us at least 14 days prior to your booking date. This is then valid for another 6 months. Please note that this is at our discretion and is subject to individual circumstances and time of year. Cancellations made within 14 days of your pick up date will not be transferable or refunded and will be charged 50% of the total hire cost. Cancellations made within 7 days of the pick up or 'no shows' will be charged the full hire cost. Should you cancel your booking once your hire has started, you will not receive a refund.

  How can I pay?

We accept cash, bank transfer, MasterCard, Visa, and UK Debit cards. Debit cards are free to use but credit cards do incur a 3% fee.
If you have a non UK card, we will email you a link so you can pay securely online.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please make sure the driver/s is present and that they have their drivers licence, and DVLA Code (DVLA Code available from www.gov.uk, you will also need your national insurance number-UK licences only), passport (or other suitable photo ID) and proof of address with them. Please bring a credit card so that your details can be left on the contract. You will also need to bring bedding with you if you are not hiring it from us.  If you have an iPod/I phone this should plug into our audio system, but we do recommend that you bring with you a spare lightning lead as these are notoriously fragile.

  Is there a security bond?

Yes, £200 for 4 days or less hires, and £500 for longer, drivers aged 25 - 75 or £750 for drivers aged 21- 24. The bond payment is payable on all occasions. The bond refunded is processed 10 working days after the return of the Camper. This is to allow for any congestion charges and parking fines to be processed.
You can reduce your excess though by selecting one of our other insurance options which is a great way of having peace of mind but remember the full bond is still payable on collection.

Is insurance included in the prices?

Yes, insurance is compulsory for each driver so the quoting system will automatically add this in depending on the age of the driver and whether you are driving just in the UK or outside of the UK (mainland Europe).

How much for an extra driver?

An extra driver is an additional £5 + VAT per day.

Can I take a Child Seat?

Our campers have front airbags and the rear seat has one lapbelt and one 3 point belt ( If you wish to use a child seat in this seat you will possibly need a seat belt extension these are available at your own liability . They can take child seats that are certified for Lap belts, 3 point belts and Booster seats . All child seats are used at your own liability , Getaway Campers accepts no responsibility for any fitment or use of child or booster seats

What if I drive into the London Congestion Zone, or Cross Dartford Crossing

This can be a bit tricky, but the areas are heavily sign posted. You are responsible for paying this yourself either on the day or next day. This can be done online or by telephone. Failure to do so will result in a £65 fine from Transport for London which then goes up steeply if not paid within 14 days. The best thing is to either take alternate routes or park your camper in a suburb for the day. Don't worry though, our depot is well outside the congestion zone. If you receive a Congestion Charge or Parking fine we usually pay this out of your security bond plus a £20 admin charge. Dartford Crossing is on automatic payment so no need to worry, the charge for this is £1.67 each way and will be deducted from your security bond.

Does my Quotation guarantee availability and what is a Booking Request?

Unfortunately the Quotation doesn't actually guarantee that we definitely have availability for the dates you have requested. This is especially true over the summer months or when certain festivals are on like Glastonbury. The best thing is to do a quick quote first and we will confirm availability.

A Booking Request is similar to the Quotation in that we can't guarantee your request, but we will check the dates you want and then advice whether you are good to go. If we can't meet your request you don't have to worry about losing a deposit, as we only take the deposit when the dates are definitely available.

When should I book for Glastonbury or other festivals?

We've noticed a huge increase in the enquiries for Glastonbury and other festivals. To get a place, you literally need to contact us as soon as tickets go on sale. Unfortunately a week before is a little hopeful...

Please note that we have very limited availability for music festivals. Priority will go to long term hire bookings.

Can I choose my Camper?

Sorry, but generally we allocate campers ahead of time depending on where they are going, the length of time and servicing requirements. All our campers are laid out the same and drive exactly the same.
